Best things to do on the Garden Route

Family Activities:

  • Redberry Farm – with strawberry picking, a restaurant, a mini train, bubble ball, pony rides, a play park and a hedge maze, kids and adults will be entertained for hours.
  • Beaches – just 5kms away is the stunning Gwaing Beach, for fishing, and swimming and it has braai facilities. Further afield, there is an abundance of sandy gems to choose from, including Victoria Bay, Herolds Bay, and all the beaches across the towns of Mossel Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
  • Outeniqua Transport Museum – with vintage locomotives, fire engines and cars, it’s a big hit with people of all ages. Farmer’s Market – several Saturday and Sunday markets will keep you busy on the weekends, offering delicious local foods, skilled crafts, and kids entertainment.
  • Hiking – There are incredible hikes, catering for ramblers of all levels. Pepsi Pools offers a quick and easy half-hour walk through exhilarating pine forest, that even the youngest of hikers can accomplish. You are rewarded with a stunning, dark coloured rock pool, where you can picnic and swim. Other beautiful local hikes include Old George Dam, Forest Buzzard, Half Collard, Doring River and Cape Dune Molerat, varying from easy to advanced.
  • Ethical animal encounters – It’s not too far to the nearest game reserves, with the Garden Route Game Lodge accommodating the Big 5. There are also places that offer encounters with elephants, sharks, whales, dolphins, birds, monkeys, lemurs, meerkats, big cats, wolves, and many more animals.
  • Golf – with more than a dozen courses to choose from, some of which have seen golfing legends such as Gary Player, Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, golfers will be over-the-moon. Simola, Fancourt and Pinnacle Point are some of the best Garden Route golf courses to play on.
  • Garden Route Mall – for all the top high street shops, and some unique stores, you can drive 10kms to the mall. It even has a cinema, with eight screens.

For the adults:

  • Wine Farms – the Eden wine route presents over 30 wine farms. The picturesque Herold Wine Estate is the closest to Mooikloof, and has a great tasting selection, and an inviting menu.
  • Beer and Gin – Just outside of George is the lovely estate where 10 Oxes gin is crafted. They even offer classes where you can make your own bottle. Robertsons Craft Beer Brewery offers a lovely brewpub and bite restaurant in central George.

Garden Route Adventure Activities:

  • Scuba diving and snorkeling – for ocean lovers, there are lots of dive centres up and down the Garden Route, where you can plan a trip to experience the incredible reefs around the coast.
  • For the fearless – If you don’t mind the idea of being dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of meters above land, you can plan to go abseiling, bungee jumping, skydiving, paragliding and ziplining, at various adventure centres.
  • Garden Route Fishing – from land-based fishing, to dam fishing, to river fishing, to deep-sea fishing, everything is available for recreational fishers.

If all the things to do in the Garden Route aren’t enough to keep you busy, Cape Town is a four-hour drive away.

The drive to the mother city is scenic, with plenty of padstals to stop at along the way. There are even two routes to choose from, with the N1 route branching off at Swellendam, taking you through Robertson Valley and close to the beautiful Paarl wine estates.

Cape Town offers some of the top cultural experiences in the country, with dozens of museums and galleries to visit. There are hundreds of restaurants and bistros, providing every type of cuisine, from Korean-fusion barbeque and Japanese ramen, to Cape Malay curries. A must do is always heading to the top of Table Mountain, either by hiking the trail, or taking the cable car.

There are endless adventures in Cape Town. The airport is just 10kms from Mooikloof for visits to family and friends in the major cities, or to connect to other airports for overseas travel.
